The Group Therapy Centre - Cambridge
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: "Does group therapy work?"A: Last year 64 people got better by attendng our therapy groups, so there's every chance that you will too.
Q: "Do I just turn up and join a group without preparation?"
A: No. Before joining a group you’ll be seen individually by a qualified therapist who’ll listen to you and help you decide whether group therapy is right for you. This can take one or more meetings and you’ll only join a group when you’re ready.
Q: "If I join a group will I have to start talking about myself straightaway?"
A: No. Like anything new, it takes a little time to get used to the group, but members often feel that a burden is being lifted when they share their troubles with others. Everything that happens in the group is confidential and no one else outside the group will know.
Q: "Is group therapy better than individual counselling?"
A: People often come to us after they’ve had some individual counselling or therapy. Because group therapy usually takes place over a longer time, it can help you to see the ‘bigger picture’ and offers different ways and means of tackling problems. The vast majority of people who join our groups are very satisfied with their therapy.
Q: "How can I trust other people not to make fun of me or my problems?"
A: People join groups for many reasons. Group therapy helps members to explore difficulties and to gain confidence in being with others. Because everyone is in the ‘same boat’ the group’s dynamics can be very supportive and helpful.
Q: "How long will the therapy take?"
A: As long as you need. We run groups for differing lengths of time and the decision about which group to join can be made during your individual meetings with a therapist.
Q: "If I decide to join a group how long will it take before I start?"
A: It usually takes just a few weeks from your initial contact with the Centre to joining a group.
Q. "How will I fit the therapy sessions into my daily life?"
A: We hold daytime and evening sessions in Cambridge city, and daytime sessions in Bar Hill. Where possible, we will fit you into a group and time that suits you.
Q."I’ve heard that therapy is expensive – is it?"
A. No, it’s very cost-effective: – group members are asked to make a contribution towards their therapy on a sliding scale according to household income. There are also concessions for those on low incomes or who are in receipt of benefits and/or allowances.
